Rosa’s father name was John _ see marriage cert.

Rosa Scott’s father owned a Gun Shop (etc) in London..... said to be in
sight of Bow-Bells at that time. Rosa had a row with her parents for
marrying George Daniel apparently considered below her station. Decided
to go to Australia so never kept in touch. She did correspond with two
sisters in South Africa around the early 1900’s.
No word was heard from them again after a bad plague a few years later.

Rosa’s two sisters were Charlotte and Mary. It appears from old letters
that Mary married and Charlotte lived with them.

The address on the letter was Charlotte and Mary Scott
13 Wandel Street,
Cape Town South Africa.
April 25th 1900.

They mention having been there 20 years. They went for 2 years in 1880
and decided to stop.

In a letter dated 5th March 1860 to George from a brother RICHARD and
his wife Rachael, there is mention of coming out to Melbourne in the
Roxbourg Castle.
They left London 1st May 1853, returned to England on Jan.1854.
They said they probably would have stayed if they could have contacted
George and Rosa.
They mentioned brothers : Walter, Thomas, William, John and sister
Betsy.

A racehorse named ‘ Spondoulie ‘ was owned by him. There is an article
(from Alan Daniel) which accredits the saying to this horse.

His brother Walter Rin 951 also moved to Nth. Qld..
The descendants of the two brothers form the two main branches of the
Daniel family in North Qld.

Edward seems to have been a pretty aggressive person who did not show
his feelings. I’ve heard it say that old Joe Wolfe was much the same. No
doubt this was the text at the time. He had been quite open in his dislike
for Rose Rin (381). He apparently used to get his Grandchildren to pick
all the bindi eyes from the yard and would give a penny/100 picked. Rose
would have to give hers to one of the other kids to get her money. He
never wanted her near him and would say so.

To me then it is very interesting that when he was dying in the Cairns
base hospital it was Rose who was holding his hand as he died. This was
when she was still a young girl of eleven. During the school holidays
Rose had the job of taking up his clean pyjamas every day. Matron
Edwards had told Rose on one occassion when she found her waiting
outside to be let in, that she had permission to go inside as soon as she
arrived at the hospital each morning. She was with him from nine in the
morning to after he went to sleep in the evening each day until he died.
They obviously talked a lot and a close bond must have developed. When
he was close to death Rose’s father did not want her around. Matron
Edwards insisted Rose stay as Edward was obviously finding comfort
from Rose. I have asked Rose how she felt being so young and going
through such an experience. She has said it just felt right at the time.
It is interesting that Rose’s lile has been one of service to other people.
Perhaps Edward saw this in the little girl. When dying and he came more
aware of his higher self he needed healing that this little girl was able
to give him as he passed on. There are obvious lessons there for us all.
Most of us of course take a lifetime to work only part of it out.

occupation: The name of the sawmill was Berrybank. He apparently
bought a dozen homes when they finally moved to Cairns. Edgar was given
one in Mc Cleod St rent free until George died when it became his. Lennie
and Horace were cut from the will when they didn’t come near him when
he was dying.

The Keogh’s lived at bellview on the hill while the Daniel’s lived in the
valley. The Keogh’s had all girls while the Daniels had son’s. The girls
were set until the Wolf’s moved in.

She was 16 years old when she married Edward.

The Family Bible was Catherine’s. Somewhere along the line I was told
the Bible was given to her by her father when she left Glasgow Scotland.
There were only 5,000 copies of this bible made. The Bible contains
entries made by Edward Daniel of births and marriages for their children.
I’ve added some details for the deaths of those children. All entries
appear to have been made by Edward. The entries for the first three born
are very neatly penned. The middle two not so neat and the last two are
quickly done. You can tell by the shape of some of the letters such as the
‘ E ‘ that Edward did the lot.

There is no ‘ s ‘ on the end of Newbigging and Catherine is not spelt with

The Family Bible shows ‘ Newbigging ‘ with an ‘ s ‘ on the end, also
Catherine was spelt ‘ Katherine ‘. This probably happened as she was
known as ‘ Kate ‘. As Edward made all the entries in the Family Register,
I will use Jean’s info and use the corrected spelling.

She had a brother William ( Willie ) at Mt Perry west of Bundaberg. Her
Mother and sister were also there at one time. They may have been
visiting her brother from Scotland or may have lived there. This was
about 1909. There are two postcards sent to her by her mother from Mt
Perry, dated July 15 th 1909. One of William’s sons was killed in France
in WW1. The memorial card is on CD. A photo of another of Williams son’s
‘ John ‘ who was a clerk in a butcher shop in Bundaberg is also on CD. He
was 20 at the time. The photo was taken in 1909.
There is also a photo of Mary ? .... her sister Mary’s daughter.

She also had a sister named ‘ Jean ‘.

She died from a gall bladder attack. She was living at 231 Mc Leod St.
Cairns at the time. Her daughter in law always felt responsible for the
attack as a few days before she had eaten boiled chicken with about a
half inch of fat on the top.

Catherine also used to do advanced embroidary, crochet work (etc) and
was very generous in what she did for others. Jean told me of a pink
crochet dress Catherine had been knitting for someone else ... or so she
had been told ....... when she was a young girl. Jean’s birthday was within
two days of Christmas and so Christmas and her birthday had always
been combined. The joy of receiving that dress for her birthday has
always been special to her.
She also was in the CWA and used to run the tea room on the top floor of
Bolands. At the time, Bolands had the only lift in Cairns. Quite often Jean
would go with her Grandmother to work where she would be bought a
colouring in book before going up on the lift to the tea room where
Catherine ran the tea room.

Apparently ‘Kate’ aged quickly and looked quite old when she died.

brother (William John (Jack) Daniel .. Rin : ... 950 ) & sister (Mary
Elizabeth Daniel nee Daniel Rin : ... 954 ) from our Daniel family, also
known down in Victoria as the ‘ Happy Valley ‘ Daniels’. There are no
apparent relationships between the ‘Scarsdale’ and the ‘ Happy Valley ‘
Daniel ‘ families before these marriages took place.

John & Mary of course form two main branches of our family tree.

Charlotte Daniel (Rin 956) and James Daniel ( Rin 959 )were brother and
sister. They were not directly related to other Daniel families in
Victoria at the time. They both married into the Daniel family of George
Daniel (Rin 948) and Rosa Daniel nee Scott (Rin 949).

James married Mary Elizabeth Daniel (Rin 954)
Charlotte married John (Jack) Daniel (Rin 950). Remember Jack also had
a younger sister named Charlotte. Must have been pretty confusing at the
time. It appears the families were recognised as being either the Happy
Valley or Scarsdale Daniels, but I could be wrong.

Charlotte also appears on the family tree as ( Rin 984 ) as the sister of
James Daniel ( Rin 959 )

So, a brother and sister from one Daniel family married a brother and
sister from another Daniel family. Both families were not immediately
related. Requires further research.

popping up. The ancestors of James could have been related to the George

Here you have two Daniel lines coming together, and it happens twice.

Daniel line.

The old hall and school at Nigger Ck. were removed in the mid sixties.

Noel Dempsey at Evelyn is the man to see re Daniel History. He bought

Birth registered at Herberton, 18/12/1911 - Nana was 27 years old,
Grandpop was 25.... almost arrived too soon ... Nana fell off a horse 3
weeks before he was born.

Dad told me he nearly died from appendicitis when he was about 10 or 11
when they still lived at Evelyn. The story goes that his parents rounded
up all the Champagne they could get hold of in the district and he was
made to drink it...... apparently it saved his life. Unfortunately Dad felt
that since then he was living on borrowed time..... it obviously had an
effect on his outlook on life.

George Daniel was home birthed on the Evelyn Tableland family property Bogaduck on the 31/10/1911.

Photography became a life long hobby for him most likely influenced by his mother Ruby Wolfe who had taken up photography early in her teaching career at Charters Towers during the first decade of the 20th Century. The Daniel family were well known early pioneers on the Evelyn Tableland and surrounds being involved in the timber industry and earlier as tin miners discovering the beach which later promoted Mount Garnet onto the world stage during the second world war.

George maintained his interest in photography throughout his life leaving a portfolio of images of North Queensland from the 1920’s in prints and negatives. His negative, slide and super8 movie collection is currently being converted to digital format to preserve his body of work well into the future.

He played saxaphone, clarinet, piano, piano accordion and was in Air Force bands during the war. He played in dance bands until abt 56 when he last played in Bundaberg. It took until the mid 1960’s for his mother Ruby to first see him play in a dance band on her first and last visit to Bundaberg before she died.

He was awarded life membership of the Musicians Union of Australia for his services.

He died in Innisfail Hospital 29/6/1987.

Rose has disclosed to me that she has never felt one of her family. Her
feelings are that as a child she was never accepted by her mother as she
was asmatic, couldn’t take milk or dairy products of any kind. She had to
have her own meals specially made. She recalls as a child having to eat
boiled sago as her main food until 9-10 years of age.
Her only support were her two Grandmothers (Wolfe and Daniel rin 172) -
without them she doesn’t know how she would have survived the years
before her marriage.

Her Grandfather Edward would give all the children money for every
hundred bindi eyes they could remove from the yard. Rose was never
included. She started school when she was ten with her sister Olive and
sat for the scholorship at Herberton. She did High School in Cairns until
Junior where she found favour with her teachers. Rose was always
dressed in the poorest of clothes and was always aware of the different
attention given her by her parents. She feels the teachers picked up on
this and gave her every encouragement at school.
It is interesting that as her Grandfather Edward became worse from his
stomach cancer he insisted Rose be with him as much as possible. She
would take fresh pyjamis each day and would sit with him at the
hospital. Her father would intervene to have her sent from the room but
her Grandfather would insist she stay. If you look at Rose’s life’s work it
has been one of service to others, beginning with 18 years at the Cairns
base hospital in the Maternity ward.

Her sister Mary Rin (380) was the only one of her family she could relate
to.

neck; dead before they got him to a hospital. birth defect of a weakness

died on a Saturday - show day weekend in Cairns on his way to the
hospital in an ambulance. He had come home from work and apparently
had been complaining to his mates about feeling queer as if there was a
water fountain in the back of his neck. He worked at the Catalina base
re-fueling the Catalina’s at the time. From work he drove home and was
met by Rose at the front steps. Rose was just getting over a bout of the
flu and he had said to her that he felt very queer and asked her if this
was the way she felt when she caught the flu. He collapsed on the front
steps and one of the children placed a pillow under his head and they
covered him with a blanket. Rose rang the ambulance. They found the
engine still running in the car later on so he must have been aware

Jean grew up at 231 Mc Leod St Cairns. The house had three extra rooms
down stairs where her Grandmother ‘ Catherine ‘ ( Rin 172 ) and Uncle
Lennie ( Rin 90 ) lived. There was an extra kitchen downstairs as well.

Jean’s mother Elizabeth ( Rin 174 ) named her Catherine in her second
Christian name after her mother in law as it was Catherine who had
taken her to hospital at the outpatients at Cairns base where Jean was
born. Her father ‘ Edgar ‘ was at work. He owned a bus run in Cairns. It
was December and was quite hot and Catherine was a big help during the
stay in hospital.
Her mother chose ‘ Jean ‘ because she just liked the name. When she told
Catherine she would name the baby ‘ Jean Catherine ‘ after her, she said
that was terrific as the baby would be named after her and her sister.
That was how they found out Catherine had a sister named ‘ Jean ‘. Source

Jean has also passed on to me post cards sent by Claude ( Arthur ) Daniel
( Rin 92 ) sent to his family while he was overseas during WW1. Copies

all in and between you and me I liked all the nice things that were said
about me. But I guess all girls are a bit vain.- first ride in a pram on 20
th Nov ‘49 - 1st words were Dadda at 6 months - 1st visit to Cooktown
from Bundaberg on Cairns mail train then by plane to Cooktown just 3
weeks old - began to crawl at 6 months - stood alone at 7 months - 1st
steps at 10 1/2 months - walked 18 th October 1950 - I received
presents from lots of Mum & Dad’s friends. I had 15 rattles given to me
so I have high jinks when I am put on the floor to play with them all. -
my favourite plaything is my Teddy Bear but like to get into Mum’s
cupboards most of all - How I slept - I slept well but at times put on
turns - 1st tooth came through 22 March ‘ 50 - It was discovered by Mum
who was more excited than I was. My 2nd came through on the 1st of
April. (What a fool I was) - I usually had my daily nap from 9 - 11 in the
morning - Lunchtime I would play and sometimes annoy Mum. Then I went
down again at 12.30 p.m. & generally woke up about 2.30 p.m. - I simply
adored my bath, used to suck my washer and splash Mum from head to
toe. - My first smack was when I crawled for breaking Mummy vase - My
first christmas I received a Rocking horse from Santa - My favourite -
getting into trouble. With my 2nd tooth I had much trouble & broke out
into a lot of things these grown ups call blisters. I had to be painted
with some awful purple stuff (Genteoin Violet) all over my neck which I
objected to very strongly. Mum said I looked like Sir Francis Drake with
his frilled colar. They kept me paintedlike this for a whole fortnight.
They have cleared up now, no more fights with Mum so everything is nice
and rosy again. I fell off the bed one night, I thought I would explore the
bed on the other side while mum was making my bed. But I wanted to see
too much and ended up in Dad’s shoes on the floor. The only thing I hurt
was my dignity so that was alright.

The old hospital at Cooktown was built over an old Bora ring. Info given to me sometime during 1989 by two old Cooktown identities I got to know who stayed at Farnora retirement village over the back fence from the Tills Street house. I would walk Scottie, mum’s dog around the village most afternoons.

I was Christened George Ian James Daniel.

The reason given by my Mother as to why it took so long to Christen me is that they were unable to agree on my name.

My father had wanted me to be called George from the start after him. George the third didn’t go down too well with mum so she held out for Ian. The compromise was George was to be first in my second name.

Just before my Christening one Saturday morning my mother took me away from the house down to the turn styles next to Twidales in Blackstone. It was the gate we went to school through. There she explained I was old enough to decide for my self what names I would like to be known by.

She explained the James was her father’s name. The choices were _Ian James George and Ian George James or stay with George Ian James.

I asked her what my father wanted and she said George Ian James. I had liked the sound _ it sounded like Georgian James and at that age was not aware of how much she had stood up for Ian as my name.

Mum although supportive you could tell was so let down that morning when George Ian James was chosen.

One of the many gifts of our mother was her ability to confiude in her children from a very early age the discernment of the truth in others. We were the only family she had.

She had preferred the Ian to be kept first in the second name and either of the first two choices were fine. Through out my life the George would always get in the way particularly in formwork. Even a nick name was George. In time the issue went to visa cards. Enough was enough. Fifteen years ago the name was legally changed to Ian James George and it is now rounded off to just simply Ian James Daniel three hebrew words which mean Gift of God, ursurps or replaces God is my Judge which has some balance to it.

I definitely take after my mother’s side of the family, the Mc Donalds. A full head of hair says it all while my baldy cousins continue the Daniel tradition.

We had never known our Mother’s side of the family. Recent research by my sister Glenda turned up a family group image with Mum’s father in it when he was 10-12 years of age. The image Glenda sent me was imported into Photos on the apple mac. There is a very handy function in Photos which ask’s you to identify faces in your database. Without prompting the software identified my grandfather as myself from a group photo taken on a beach in the 1920’s. That’s abt as good as it gets. Looking at yourself when that age, was a bit spooky. So now the Mc Donald’s get a go and Ian James Daniel it is from here on in.

Mum’s story on my birth _ There were signs of potential miscarriage at 7 months but managed to get through it all with complete rest and the Doctor’s help. The morning of the birth at 12:30 am she was unable to get the attention of the night nurse in another part of the Cooktown hospital at the end of a long verandah. With the water broken and head showing she had to make her way down the verandah where she was met by the nurse. My sister Glenda and I were the first white babies born at the hospital after the war.

Producing the register which was a hobby had unexpected outcomes. Composing verse began in 2003 as the Register finished. The inspiration, pleasure and creative motivation came from a life full of stories from living in different cultures needing a place to find a home. Critique and support from friends state side in particular Jani Murphy was no small matter either _ and so it goes as Margaret Gilsen (still my mentor) would say _ it is to walk the dream.
